Argentinian producer B.O.N.G. has already been making a big splash this year, with releases on Avangardia, Enormous Tunes, and Unreleased Digital. His latest offering with Silk Digital is a virtual clinic on (quality) deep house, hence the tongue-in-cheek title. The steady "classic-house" rhythm and funky bassline create a chilled groove early. As the track develops, crystalline synth stabs begin to imbue the track with a cave-like atmosphere - a veritable symphony of stalagmites and stalactites. Remixing details for this one have been elegantly handled by two rising Hungarian stars - Human8 and Elfsong. The former, fresh off of acclaimed releases with Tilth Music and Ready Mix Records, provides a little more house flavor, with a rhythmically intricate take. Silk veteran Elfsong, who also been on the warpath of late with a string of acclaimed releases (Proton Music, Toes in the Sand, MistiqueMusic), has enhanced the cavernous mood of the original: the sound design, highlighted by head-below-water aquatic textures and a "submerged" bassline, once again evokes a spelunking sensation.
The second original in the package, "Small Things," builds on the deep house energy of the first; however, fans of progressive and trance will also be pleased by the hyper melodic arpeggios that arrive early in the track, as well as a climactic (and tremendously poignant) break. Two more Hungarian phenoms and also Silk's fixtures - Downkill and Aeron Aether, provide several unique interpretations of the original, starting with the former's "Small Remake" mix. Drawing inspiration from the more outer-worldly synths of the original, Downkill masterfully creates a more "muted," life-on-Mars vibe through the addition of filtered beats and spacial beats. Aether, on the contrary, has chosen to give the track a little more drive with his "house" remix, a standout for fans of emotional progressive. His gift for crafting melodic soundscapes is once again on display here, including a gorgeous cello-backed break. Capping off the package, Aether's "breaks" remix will certainly satisfy fans of progressive breakbeat; yet, the track's intricate textures and aching beauty underscore its cross-genre appeal. The Silk Digital team can hardly contain its enthusiasm for one of its most diverse, yet consistently rich packages to date.
